NATIONAL PARK

Banff Travel - Route to
Canada's most famous national park is home
to a variety of distinctive natural features and cultural and historical
sites. Just 1.5 hours from the City of Calgary by car you’ll find
rugged mountains, glaciers, icefields, alpine meadows, beautiful blue
cold-water lakes, mineral hot springs, deep canyons and hoodoos. These
compose the natural landscape and habitat for a great variety of mammals
such as elk, bighorn sheep, black and grizzly bear, and caribou. Banff
National Park is also part of the UNESCO Rocky Mountain Parks World
Heritage Site.
In the fall of 1883, three Canadian Pacific Railway construction workers
stumbled across a cave containing hot springs on the eastern slopes of
the Rocky Mountains in Alberta. From that humble beginning was born
Banff National Park, Canada's first national park and the world's third.
Spanning 6,641 square kilometres (2,564 square miles) of valleys,
mountains, glaciers, forests, meadows and rivers, Banff National Park is
one of the world's premier destination spots. You can tour historic
sites, soak in hot springs, stroll along the shores of Lake Louise,
enjoy luxury accommodation in the Banff townsite, take in amazing
adventures & activities and drive the Icefields Parkway into
adjoining Jasper National Park.
In the summer Banff National Park is a hiking wonderland, containing
over 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) of trails, more than any other
mountain park. Other summer activities include lake fishing, rock
climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking and luxury spa experiences
to name a few. Unique for a national park is world-class skiing and
snowboarding at the three ski hills of Sunshine Village, Lake Louise Ski
Area and Banff @ Mount Norquay. Winter experiences can take you beyond
downhill skiing to include snowshoeing, cross country skiing, ice
climbing and even dog sledding.
The park is in the Rocky Mountain natural life zone, with terrain
divided into three separate eco-regions: the montane, the sub-alpine and
the alpine. Each eco-region is characterized by a different plant and
animal regime, as well as a different climate and elevation.
The Trans-Canada Highway, the Banff-Radium Highway, the scenic Bow
Valley Parkway and the awe-inspiring Icefields Parkway are all major
travel routes that bisect the park, enhancing your chances of seeing the
abundant wildlife inhabiting the mountain regions. Lucky travelers may
see elk, deer, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, moose, black bears,
grizzly bears, wolves and a host of other large and small mammals. Banff
National Park is truly a must-see for all nature and outdoor
enthusiasts.
